Latte vs. Cappuccino vs. Mocha: Espresso Drinks Explained

Friend's Corner Tea & Snack Bar is best known for bubble tea and Filipino drinks, but our menu also has a full lineup of coffee: espresso, latte, cappuccino, mocha, americano and drip coffee, hot or iced. If you have ever wondered what really separates a latte from a cappuccino, this guide is for you.

The short answer: they all start with espresso. The difference is what goes in next and how much of it.

Start With Espresso

Espresso is a small, concentrated shot of coffee made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure. A single shot is about one ounce. It is bold and slightly syrupy, with a layer of golden foam on top called crema.

A single shot of espresso contains roughly 60 to 65 mg of caffeine, and a double has about twice that. On our menu you can order Espresso (1) or Espresso (2) on its own, or enjoy it as the base of the drinks below.

Latte

A caffè latte ("milk coffee" in Italian) is espresso with a generous amount of steamed milk and a thin layer of milk foam on top. Because it has the most milk of the classic espresso drinks, it tastes smooth, creamy and mild, with the coffee flavor in the background.

Choose a latte if you like your coffee soft and creamy, or if you are just getting into espresso drinks. Iced lattes are simply espresso and cold milk over ice, a refreshing choice in warm weather.

Cappuccino

A cappuccino also combines espresso with steamed milk, but it has much more foam and usually less liquid milk than a latte. Traditionally it is a smaller drink made of roughly equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foam.

The result is lighter and airier in texture, with a stronger coffee taste than a latte. Choose a cappuccino if you want a more coffee-forward drink with a velvety foam cap. An iced cappuccino keeps the bolder coffee flavor with a frothy top.

Mocha

A mocha (or caffè mocha) is essentially a latte with chocolate. Espresso is mixed with chocolate sauce or cocoa, then topped with steamed milk. It tastes like a cross between a latte and a hot chocolate.

Choose a mocha if you have a sweet tooth or are not sure you love the taste of coffee yet. The chocolate softens any bitterness. Our menu offers a hot coffee mocha and an iced mocha.

Americano

An americano is espresso diluted with water. It has a similar strength to regular drip coffee but a different flavor, slightly richer and with a little of the espresso's character. A popular story says it was named after American soldiers in Italy who added water to espresso to make it taste more like the coffee they had at home.

Choose an americano if you like black coffee without milk. On a hot day, try our iced americano.

Drip Coffee

Drip coffee is brewed by letting hot water slowly pass through ground coffee in a filter. It is the everyday cup many Americans grow up with: simple, quick and easy to customize with milk and sugar.

A Quick Word on Milk Foam

Much of the difference between these drinks comes down to milk. When milk is steamed, a jet of steam heats it and pushes in tiny air bubbles. Steamed with only a little air, milk becomes silky "microfoam," which is what gives a latte its smooth body. Steamed with more air, it becomes thicker, fluffier foam, which is what sits on top of a cappuccino. The coffee is the same; the texture of the milk changes how the drink feels and how strong the coffee tastes. That is why a cappuccino seems bolder even though it starts with the same shot of espresso as a latte.

How Much Caffeine Is in Each Drink?

Lattes, cappuccinos, mochas and americanos usually have the same caffeine as the espresso in them, so a drink made with one shot has roughly the caffeine of one shot. Adding milk, chocolate or water changes the taste and size, not the caffeine. A bigger cup only has more caffeine if more espresso goes into it. Drip coffee can actually contain more caffeine than a single-shot latte, because a full mug of brewed coffee adds up.

Hot or Iced?

Every one of these drinks can be enjoyed hot or cold. Iced versions are made with cold milk or water and poured over ice, and they are great in the summer. At Friend's Corner you can choose a hot latte, cappuccino or coffee mocha, or an iced latte, iced cappuccino, iced mocha or iced americano.

Coffee or Tea?

If you are torn between coffee and tea, here is a simple rule of thumb: coffee drinks are usually stronger in caffeine and flavor, while tea drinks like milk tea, jasmine or matcha are gentler. A latte and a matcha latte-style bubble tea can be equally creamy, but they taste completely different. Our Thai tea vs. matcha guide covers the tea side, and in winter you might enjoy one of our hot milk teas.
